Opening Day of Hunting Season

On the morning this photo was taken, I was awakened at 4:00 am by the sound of ATVs roaring past the horse trailer I was sleeping in. It was the 2014 opening day of Bow Hunting in Colorado and the bow hunters were out in force. I’m personally not a hunter but I understood the excitement for a day like that.

This image was shot durning the morning hike. We arrived at the trailhead at first light and hiked along a old logging road while waiting for the sun to rise. We were very deep in the Aspens so I never did see the sunrise but the light was incredibly, none the less.

My hunter’s name is Curt Ladich, a friend I’ve known since High School. He comes to this area near Pagosa Springs, Colorado every year for the last 15 year where he bow hunts Elk, Deer and Bear. I had the opportunity to follow him this year and photograph the experience. During the two weeks I was with him, he shared his knowledge of Elk hunting with me and I took away from this experience an new appreciation for hunters and their lifestyle.

This was one of my favorite shots from the two weeks I spent photographing Curt and a group Elk Hunters. I’ll be following this up with more images and story so please be sure to check back often.
